Tempered Glass
Due to the high strength of tempered glass, it can be used in curtain walls, large glass windows and glass wall systems to withstand high wind pressure or the level plus load specified in Table 3 of Article 17(3) of the Building (Construction) Regulation. However, tempered glass is easily broken spontaneously due to nickel sulfide inclusions. Therefore, if tempered glass is to be used in the construction of buildings, every effort and attempt should be made to reduce spontaneous breakage during the production process. In view of this, the building affairs supervisor recommended and encouraged the reduction of the use of tempered glass in the curtain wall, glass window and glass wall system of the building above the ground floor. Alternatives to tempered glass are annealed glass, heat-strenghtened glass, laminated glass, or different combinations of the above. In order to provide an adequate level of safety protection, the appropriate type, thickness and size of glass should be selected. The intended use of the glass and the serious consequences that may occur when broken must be considered. If tempered glass is used, registered structural engineers and registered contractors should ensure that the glass manufacturer has adopted an acceptable quality assurance program to reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage of the tempered glass.
